Sometimes its nice to know who’s been visiting your blog and where they came from, rather than just a numbers game – “i had so many visitors last week” etc. Making good use of visitor statistics can help you fine-tune copy and content if you’re a serious online marketeer.

And if you’re not, then there’s still nothing more satisfying than seeing daily visitor numbers rise week on week. If nothing else, it proves you’re doing something right.

Blogger and Wordpress blog platforms make it really easy to quickly add stat programs like Google Analytics and StatCounter through their Admin User Panels. In Blogger’s case, you simply need to add a html/javascript gadget and copy and paste the StatCounter tracking code into it. It really is that simple.

However, when I came to add StatCounter stats to my Tumblr account, I found it rather more challenging.

Tumblr is described as “a blogging platform that allows users to post text, images, video, links, quotes, and audio to their tumblelog, a short-form blog. Users are able to “follow” other users and see their posts together on their dashboard. You can like or reblog other blogs on the site and other users can do the same to your posts. The service emphasizes customizability and ease of use” (see wikipedia)

I’ve been using to collate a fantasy iPod playlist, posting a different music track or video from YouTube each day. I now have a steady stream of fellow music lovers following my posts.

I couldn’t find anything in the help pages and most online searches drew a blank.

Then I found, almost by accident, the nugget of information I needed: how to install javascript into your Tumblr template, and so I’d like to share that information with you here.

As with all template changes, please, please make sure you’ve got a back up somewhere first (expand widgets if you’re doing such template changes on Blogger) as things can go wrong and be very very hard to recover from. You’ve been warned! (But don’t let that put you off trying altogether).

So in my case, I wanted to install the custom tracking javascript supplied by StatCounter. Here’s what you do.

1 – Log into your Tumblr Account.

2 – Click the “Customise” link.

3 – Click “Theme” and then select “Use Custom HTML”.

4 – Scroll to the end of the code and paste your StatCounter code JUST BEFORE the < /body>  </html> tags.

5 – Don’t forget to click “Save Changes”.

6 – Log back into your StatCounter account to check that it is recording visits (unless you’ve purposefully blocked your IP address from being recorded as a visit).

You can find out more about using StatCounter – a FREE visitor tracking counter at StatCounter

Are you trying to figure out how to make more money from your blog? Or even how to make money by blogging in the first place? Here are 3 options for beginners to investigate to generate a bit of income from your blog.

1) PPC Advertisers (aka Pay Per Click). Some awesome PPC Advertisers are Google Adsense, Yahoo! Publisher Network, and Bidvertiser. Adsense is by far the most popular, but there are actually other options out there too. The most important thing to think about if this interests you, is that you will need to choose a profitable niche for your blog. What I mean by this, is that you need a topic for your blog that Google Adsense or another advertiser could pair with relevant advertisements. For example, you could easily advertise weight loss plans and equipment on a blog about fitness and weight loss. On a blog about new and popular electronics, advertisements for ipods or HD TVs would fit flawlessly. But what sort of ads would advertisers place on a blog about your everyday life, or on a blog that features something new everyday? I don’t really know the answer to that, and neither will advertisers- which means you will either get ads that will not generate any profit or no ads at all.

2) Affiliate Marketing. Basically affiliate marketing is where a merchant will let you advertise for a product and you pay you a commission of the sales. Some great affiliate marketplaces are Clickbank, Azgoogle Ads, and Commission Junction. For this to be profitable you are going to have to have a blog or website that not only has a ample amount of traffic, but also traffic that will actually be interested in what it is you are selling. So again, picking a particular niche is imperative.

3) Writing sponsored reviews. You can join PayPerPost or Reviewme, and get paid to write reviews on a topic. This may not attract some bloggers, because it can take your blog from a personalized outlet for your creativity to another way to make some fast cash. But of course, for others just interested in making some money, this can be a profitable option. If it is not clear already, all you will be required to do is to write reviews of products in exchange for money.

There are, of course, other ways to make money with your blog. But these three are the easiest to learn and impliment, and remember mastery is made in increments, not in leaps. Give some consideration to how your blog would be most profitable and research these options to find out which would be perfect for you. Good luck with turning your blog from just a hobby- to a way to make free money on the internet!

A blog is like a diary of all your thoughts and views which you add to on a daily basis.

The word “Blog” comes from the word “Web Log” and “Blogging” is the adding, writing and maintaining a blog.

There are many types of blogs and here are just a few;

a. The Personal Blog – this is the most common type of blog, it’s your online journal or diary.

b. Cultural Blog – this can be about music, theatre, opera and ballet.

c. Business Blog – these can be centered on the stock market, banking, stockbrokers, share markets and other business related subjects.

d. Science Blog – used by scientists to communicate the latest news on new and original ideas.

e. Moblog – this is blogging on the move via a mobile phone.

f. News Blog – this is quite literally about anything that has been reported recently, written recently or about an event or disaster. There are News Blogs covering every single subject imaginable.

Blogs are created by individuals or a couple of people or at the extreme, thousands. There isn’t a limit on how many people can use one blog.

How do you start?

Well, there are many free sites that you can use and all these have terms and conditions on what type of blogs you are allowed to create, some do not allow certain subjects while others might.

But if you need complete freedom then there is only one way to go and that is your own domain name and hosting.

These give you complete freedom on want you want to talk about and discuss.

Internet Marketers have taken Blogging to a whole new level because apart from writing about personal issues, now they have a way of writing reviews on products and services that they owned or have tried.

The beauty of blogging is that it is very easy to use and set-up plus with the amount of plugins that are available both free and paid for the experience can be enhanced even further.

If you have an idea or a hobby that you would like to talk about or just share with other likeminded people then setting up a blog is by far the best way to go.

Websites are a brilliant promotional tool but lack the interaction of a blog.

Blogs on the other hand can be both promotional and interactive plus you can gain followers or subscribers in a way where they can add their own content as a contributor or just to post a comment on a post.

Blogging has evolved into something far greater than was originally conceived. If the idea of blogging has filled you with excitement and a willingness to succeed then learning how to take blogging to the next level is only a SHORT STEP AWAY.
